It starts with fundamental physics, circuit elements, linear and nonlinear circuits, nodal and mesh analysis, network theorems, time-domain analysis of circuits and systems. It applies the impulse response and convolution in time domain to system analysis, transitioning into Heaviside operators to solve the associated differential equations. The operator theory naturally leads to the concept of complex frequency, transfer function, poles and zeros, and Laplace and Fourier domain analysis. The course develops a parallel dual time and frequency domain view of systems mostly in the concept of electrical circuits.
Analog Circuit DesignAli Hajimiri, Bren Professor of Electrical Engineering and Medical Engineering; Executive Officer for Electrical Engineering; Co-Director, Space-Based Solar Power Project.This course investigates the transistor-level analysis and design of analog integrated circuits with an emphasis on intuitive design methods, quantitative performance measures, and practical circuit limitations. Circuit performance is evaluated by means of design-oriented analysis methods. After a review of the underlying physics and math, we investigate the low- and high-frequency behavior of single- and multi-stage transistor amplifiers, with an emphasis on the method of time- and transfer-constants. We discuss the design process of more complex analog systems and discuss subjects of feedback, stability, advanced biasing techniques, and noise in great details. The course concludes with introduction to several important blocks and subsystems common to many systems.
